Our client is a single parent with 2 dependent children ……

Client Profile:

Our client is a single parent with 2 dependent children, she has complex physical and mental health needs. Our client had fled domestic violence and is currently in temporary accommodation.

Reason why client needs advice:

The client needed advice relating to benefits, housing and debt. The client had non-priority debt of over £20k and was being chased by creditors. This, in addition to her fleeing domestic violence, was having a very adverse impact on her mental health.

What We Have Done to Help the Client:

Debt and housing advice was given to prevent the client incurring further housing debt from the property she fled from, and to prevent rent arrears in her current accommodation. We helped the client to complete a PIP application as part of advising her on how to maximise her income. Options for dealing with the debt were explained along with the implications. The client chose to enter into the Breathing Space Scheme (this scheme gives temporary protection from debt collection whilst debt advice is sought) and apply for a Debt Relief Order (DRO) which our DRO Intermediary assisted with.

Outcome:

The Debt Relief Order was granted and a total of £20K was written off.  The client is waiting for the PIP decision, if awarded the client may receive the daily living rate of £61.85 per week for lower rate or £92.40 for higher rate and if mobility was granted, lower rate would be £24.45 per week and higher rate for £64.50 per week.
