Client Profile: Dorothy and John were in their 80’s and living in a 1-bedroom council property. Both were claiming state pensions and had a very small private pension. 

Reason client needs advice:  

Dorothy and John had heard about changes in the eligibility for Winter Fuel Payments and were worried that without the Winter Fuel Payment, they would not be able to cover their energy costs over the winter period.

Dorothy had serious and chronic health conditions, meaning that she needed to be in a warm environment, especially in the colder months, or risk her health conditions worsening. 

What we have done to help the client:  

Our adviser was able to complete a benefit check to ensure Dorothy and John were claiming the benefits they were entitled to.  Our clients were entitled to claim Pension Credits as well as other benefits which totalled approximately £200 per week. As they are now in receipt of Pension Credits, this means they will be eligible for this year’s Winter Fuel Payment of £300 and the Warm Home Discount, which is a further £150 to help with their energy bills this winter.  

Outcome:

Benefit entitlements including Pension Credits: £10,200 approximately per year  

Winter Fuel Payment £300 one-off payment 

Warm Homes Discount £150 one-off payment
